Ahmedabad hopes for good rain as Gujarat inches towards 100% mark

The state has received 98% of its seasonal rainfall
AHMEDABAD: With a good system activated over Gujarat, experts hope that the state would achieve cent per cent rainfall this week. As on September 1, the state has received 98% of its seasonal rainfall. India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that compared to long-term average daily rainfall, the rain so far is 20% higher for beginning of September.
The city is also likely to get good rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday according to IMD website. On Monday, Palitana in Bhavnagar district recorded 131mm rainfall, followed by Botad (108 mm), Rajkot (86mm) and Lodhika in Rajkot district (81mm).

Jayanta Sarkar, regional director of IMD, said that Gujarat is headed for a rainy week with widespread rains towards the weekend.
Sarkar said there will be two systems giving rain. “A low pressure has developed over north west Bay of Bengal which is becoming fairly well marked. A cyclonic circulation over Kutch is likely to give good rain all over Saurashtra and Kutch. State is expected to cross 100% rain this season by Tuesday or Wednesday,” said Sarkar.
The weather officials said that Gujarat region will get fairly widespread rains wherein 50-75% of the state will get rain on Wednesday and Thursday while widespread rain covering 75-100% of state is expected on Friday and Saturday. IMD website mentioned that 11 of the Gujarat districts have recorded excess rainfall and two districts had ‘large excess’ rainfall.

Officials pointed at the trend where every alternate year achieves 100% rainfall. While 2018 had recorded 76% of seasonal rainfall, the figures were 112% and 91% for the years 2017 and 2016.
The IMD forecast heavy rainfall for Panchmahal, Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Navsari, Valsad, Porbandar, Junagadh, Devbhumi Dwarka, Gir Somnath and in Kutch district for next three days. On September 7, central Gujarat districts including Anand and Vadodara would also get heavy rainfall along with a few districts in Saurashtra. Overall, almost all the districts are likely to get rainfall, mentioned the IMD.
