Upset over the alleged inaction by the police on her rape complaint, a 22-year-old woman in the Yamunanagar district of Haryana has allegedly committed suicide.
Police said the woman had consumed a poisonous substance outside the Jathlana Police Station on Monday evening.
“The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she died later,” Yamunanagar Deputy Superintendent of Police Subhash Chand told The Hindu.
Mr. Chand said that the woman and her family members had filed a complaint of rape against Manoj Kumar and five others a few days ago and the police had been investigating the matter.
Mr. Chand said the woman, along with her family members, had on September 2 visited the Jathlana Police Station to enquire about the status of her complaint, where the suicide incident occurred. “We are probing the cause of the incident,” he said. Family members of the victim alleged that local police officials were not taking any action over the rape complaint, even though it had been over 12 days since the complaint had been filed with the police.
Case registered
Mr. Chand added that the police has registered a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide).
