Salem: A 27-year-old man was arrested on Monday night for murdering his father over a property dispute. Police identified the arrested as Damodharan, 27, son of K Munusamy, 55, of Kannankurichi.
According to a police officer, Munusamy was a farmer and he had two wives - Rajammal, 48, of Mannarpalayam near Kannankurichi, and Sabitha, 40, of Annadhanapatty in the city. “After marrying Sabitha 15 years ago, Munusamy did not live with Rajammal.”
Munusamy, he said, had 80 cents land in Pottukaran cemetery area near Mannarpalayam, where Rajammal and her Sakthi Kumar, 29 and Damodharan, 27 were doing agriculture.
“Munusamy, however, decided to sell the land. On Monday around 3pm, he took a few brokers to show the land, where Rajammal and her sons picked up a quarrel with him. At one stage, Damodharan pushed his father down and attacked him. He then smashed his father’s head with a boulder, killing him on the spot,” the officer said.
When alerted, deputy commissioner (law and order) P Thangadurai, Kannankurishi inspector V Thangavel and other police officials reached the spot and initiated inquiry.
Meanwhile, Damodharan managed to escape from the spot. However, the Kannankurichi police arrested him from a hideout in the same area around 8pm the same day. He was later lodged at the Salem Central Prison under judicial custody. The Kannankurichi police have registered a case was registered and further inquiry is on.
