NEEDHAM — A Westport man was killed in an "industrial accident" Tuesday at the TripAdvisor building in Needham, officials confirmed.

Needham police identified the victim as 52-year-old James Jacobs of Westport, an employee of the Otis Elevator Company

No TripAdvisor employees were hurt, police said.

According to his LinkedIn and Facebook pages and media reports, Jacobs attended Dartmouth High School and also studied at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Several fire and rescue vehicles, including the Boston Fire Department's Technical Rescue unit, responded to the incident. A vehicle from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was also on scene.

Investigators have not released any information about the work that was being performed by Otis at the time of the incident Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, this morning there was an incident with a maintenance crew member -- employed by Otis Elevator Co. -- that is being addressed and investigated today by the Needham Police and Massachusetts State Police," TripAdvisor said in a statement. "No TripAdvisor employees were harmed, and our thoughts are with the worker’s family and colleagues during this time."

"Otis is deeply saddened to learn that we lost a team member at a jobsite this morning. Our most sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased," an Otis company spokeswoman said in a statement. "We are working to gather more information about this incident as quickly as possible. There is nothing more important to Otis than the safety of our employees, customers and the people who rely on our products and services every day."

The accident is being investigating by Needham police, state police, the Norfolk District Attorney's Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
