Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he can not "in good conscience" intervene to stop a Tamil family being deported if it risks kick-starting the people-smuggling trade.
The federal government has ruled out stepping in to allow a Sri Lankan couple and their Australian-born daughters to remain in the Queensland town of Biloela, near Gladstone, despite public rallies in support of their plight across major capital cities.
Mr Morrison said on Monday an "exception here or there" would send a message to other asylum seekers that they could settle in Australia if they travelled by boat.
The family's case is back before the courts tomorrow.
