Should I stay in a loveless marriage?

Question: I am a 55-year-old man stuck in a loveless marriage. We have been married for 25 years. Initially, everything was fine and we were like any other normal couple. After we had our second child 20 years back, we started drifting apart emotionally. Gradually, we even lost physical interest in each other. Now it has come to this point where we are like two strangers under one roof. It’s becoming very difficult to stay in this marriage. Please advise what should I do?— By Anonymous
Response by Dr. Rachna Khanna Singh: Thank you for reaching out to us, we’re glad you have trusted us to open up about your problem.

It’s completely natural to feel out of love or having a lack of interest in your partner when you have been married for a long time. Going through your words, it seems evident that this loss of interest is from both sides. Although, before jumping on a conclusion or making an assumption, we advise you to talk to your partner honestly and openly. Try to tell her all the things you have been feeling and how does she feel about all of this.

Since any major decisions involving a relationship and especially marriage cannot be solely taken by an individual, you need to take your partner’s opinion on the line. It is only then when you can decide what you can do about your marriage.

Also because you have two adult children, it might be advisable to communicate your concerns with them too, only after you talk things out with your partner. For further guidance and support, feel free to take advice from an experienced counsellor.
