Acid attack on dog: FIR lodged, Kolkata cops start probe

The stray lies dead on road near Dum Dum 11A bus stop
KOLKATA: An FIR was lodged with Chitpore police station against acid attack on the street dog, which succumbed to severe injuries on Sunday evening, at Dum Dum.
The FIR could not name any of the accused and police initiated a probe into the barbaric torture on the sleeping dog with acid that peeled off its skin, exposing its tissues, flesh and muscle. The post-mortem was carried out at Belgachia Veterniary College. Locals suspected that some miscreants, at whom the dog might be barking, were behind the brutal act. “Of late, there has been a serious rise in crime in and around Dum Dum station. Drug peddling and gambling have been on the rise,” said Subrata Ganguly, a local resident and an actor who first noticed the dog writhing in pain and raised an alarm. The dog knew all miscreants in the locality that it used to guard and bark at them till they dispersed. They must have poured acid on it when it was in deep slumber, said Ganguly.

This incident is extreme in its barbarity. We hope cops follow this case and ensure a speedy trial and exemplary punishment for this perverse act.

“Though the dog-victims are not so serious in most of the cases, acid attack on dogs is not entirely rare in this area,” said Kuhelika Goswami, a well-known animal activist who took it to Ashari, a NGO working for street dogs. Goswami and her husband tied its skin with a rope and took it to the NGO in a cab. Someone put turmeric paste on its flesh which proved troublesome for people treating the dog, said Goswami.
