The Kollam district panchayat will open a kabaddi institute at Kalluvathukkal to train school students.
The institute at the panchayat high school will have a synthetic mat court of 13 metres length and 10 metres width.
The ₹35-lakh project will function under an administrative board controlled by the panchayat. “We are planning to inaugurate the institute by September end and high school and Plus Two students will be trained in modern kabaddi there,” said president C. Radhamani here on Tuesday. Training sessions will be held from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Athletes who have participated in national and international events and recognised by the government and Sports Council will be appointed as trainers.
Honorarium
The panchayat will provide honorarium for the trainers and refreshment for the students. The district panchayat had earlier opened a boxing academy for school students as an innovative project. The academy at Government Higher Secondary School, Perinad, has all the facilities like roofed boxing ring, gallery, and quality boxing gear, including gloves, head guards, punching gloves, and punching pads.
High School and Plus Two students from all parts of the district could sign up for boxing and kabaddi training. The classes are free and the students will be selected through screening.
