CHANDIGARH: U-turn became the biggest traffic offence of the first day of the new challan policy of jacked-up fines but 33 motorists still could not be so lucky to avoid the constables.
The traffic police had issued 185 fines till 8pm, including 27 for riding two-wheeler without helmet or not fastening the chinstrap. The caught 21 pillion riders without helmet and realized Rs 1,000 each from them under the new policy. Car drivers or front passengers without seatbelt were pulled over and this time, they couldn’t get away with paying just Rs 300. The new fine was a grand.

Most of the drivers caught on mobile phone tried to pull out a Rs 500 note before being told the fine was raised to Rs 5,000. Police towed away many vehicles from the no-parking zones in different sectors and put their hands on triple riders, cars with black-filmed windows, red-light jumpers, or those who crossed the zebra and stop lines as usual.

Taxi drivers should have remembered to put on their uniform. Too late now! Dangerous driving and going without permit will cost up to five times more from now. For unauthorised use of vehicle without licence, the new fine is Rs 5,000, same as driving without licence. One of the heaviest penalties is for mixing drinking and driving. You can pay but not get away.
The road transport ministry has also introduced some new challans, for oversized vehicles (Rs 5,000) and aggregate violations of licence conditions (from 25,000 to Rs 1 lakh).
