BHUBANESWAR: The
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday started training volunteers of
Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) of Khurda district to help them to become a trained first responder and helping hand to government agencies during a disaster. The training was conducted by NDRF’s third battalion at Mundali office in
Cuttack.
NDRF officers made the youths understand about basic rescue techniques which can be used during natural calamities like cyclone, flood and fire incidents. The 24 volunteers including 15 girls of Khurda district also got the training about how to use medical first aid during an emergency.
“In the training programme, we sensitized the volunteers about basic concepts of disaster management, search and rescue, patient assessment, fire safety, water emergencies, snake bite and animal bite, group exercise and many other things related to relief and rescue operations. They will teach the youths of their village after getting this training,” said Jacob Kispotta, senior commandant of third battalion NDRF Mundali.
He said a memorandum of understanding has been signed between NDRF and department of youth under Union ministry of youth affairs and sports to train NYKS volunteers all across the country. As many as 12 NDRF battalions will train several youths across the country. A total of 10 batches will be trained in
Odisha by January 2020, he added.
These 24 youths were first batch for the NDRF. The training will continue for six days. Madhavi Agarwal, vice chairperson, NYKS board of governors, Avijit Bose, state director, NYKS, and other officers were present during the training programme.
