Bengaluru: Students suffer as pickpockets have a field day at bus stop

Many students who study in schools and colleges on Doddaballapura Road use the NES bus stop
BENGALURU: Students boarding BMTC buses at the NES stop in Yelahanka are a harried lot due to poor frequency of buses to and from Doddaballapura Road.
Jam-packed buses are forcing many, including girls, to travel on the footboard. Many students who study in schools and colleges on Doddaballapura Road use this bus stop.
"The frequency is low during peak hours and existing buses are overcrowded. But we don't have an alternative," said Renuka S, a college student.
Many complained of losing their mobile phones while boarding buses. Abinandini HR, a student, lost her phone, which she says was lifted from her bag. "Many of my friends have lost their phones while boarding buses here."
Yelahanka resident Ravishankar Prasad, who filed several police complaints on behalf of students, said: "Many have lost their cellphones as buses are overcrowded, especially between 7am and 10am. When we approach police, they advise students to be careful but are not taking action against pickpockets."

A senior BMTC official said the utility will check if it can operate additional services during peak hours. "We will also deploy Sarathi vehicles to address concerns of passengers.
A senior police officer said they will deploy home guards and policemen during peak hours at the bus stop. "We have decided to intensify drive against pickpockets."
