Fresh and dewy does it

From working on Downtown Abbey and the London Fashion Week, makeup artiste Rosie Barrett is now happy creating new looks and educating people on makeup

“I worked on a television show just after finishing school. I assisted the head makeup artiste,” says Rosie Barrett rather casually. Which show? “Oh, Downtown Abbey,” replies the makeup artiste. A part of the Kryolan Education and Pro Team, Rosie was in the city, from the UK, to set up the brand’s new store at VR Mall and conduct workshops.

Over the years, she has been part of the London Fashion Week, television and theatre productions, commercials, bridals, apart from working on Kryolan’s annual calendar. “I have always enjoyed being part of productions and working behind the scenes. I like the creative side of things,” says Rosie. Her television days saw her doing 12-hour shifts. “But with what I am doing now, there is a lot more stability. No two days are the same. And with all the new makeup and accessories in the store, I feel like a child in a toy shop,” laughs the 24-year-old.

Despite creating dramatic eyes and surreal glossy textures for lips, it is skin that she loves working with. “Skin is more challenging too. There is so much you can do with it,” says Rosie, adding, “If you get your base right everything else falls into place. I like dewy fresh finishes, which is trending now. You can still see skin and it’s not buried under layers of heavy make-up.” What’s also in are natural-looking, fluffy brows, matte lips, terracota and aubergine shades for eyes and lips.

Often, Rosie also has to deal with clients who show her Instagram posts of celebrities and demand the same look. “A lot of them want to copy Kylie Jenner or the Kardashians’ look. Those are heavily edited images. I tell my clients, ‘No one looks like that in real life. Even they don’t look like that’,” she laughs.
