Surat: Two policemen were suspended after a theft accused escaped from their custody from New Civil Hospital (NCH) early Monday morning. Deputy commissioner of police zone III has ordered departmental inquiry against the cops — head constable Dinesh Bajpai and constable Chhatrasinh Shivaji — both posted at the Varachha police station.
Accused Sunil Vaghela, a resident of Parvat Patiya, had escaped from the toilet block of NCH after breaking a wooden door and damaging an iron grill.
Vaghela was arrested on August 26 by Varachha police after he broke into a school. On not finding any valuables, he had damaged the furniture and other material. He also slept inside the school as he was sick. Next morning the school authorities found Vaghela sleeping and handed him over to the police.
After being produced in court he was sent to Lajpore Central Jail (LCJ) where he suffered a seizure. He was shifted to NCH where he was under treatment since August 27.
At around 1.45 am on Monday he sought permission from the cops to answer nature’s call. He was taken to the toilet where the cops removed handcuffs.
Taking advantage of the situation Vaghela broke a weak portion of the wooden door and created gap in an iron grill to escape. “The door is on outer side of the NCH building hence he landed in the open area once he broke the door,” said a police officer at Khatodara police station.
