Solid waste management is not the sole responsibility of local bodies, but a shared responsibility of the local body and the members of the public, said P. Jyothimani, Chairperson of National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) Monitoring Committee for Solid Waste Management (Tamil Nadu).

Addressing reporters here on Sunday after inspecting various projects of SWM in the city, the former Madras High Court Judge said that while few Corporations such as Erode, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli were able to ensure source segregation of waste into organic and inorganic to the extent of 50%, Madurai Corporation could manage only 24%. He was appreciative of Madurai Corporation’s move to have aerobic composting model of micro composting centre that would not emanate stench in residential areas. If MCC were set up at the proposed 40 sites in the city, 60% of the total waste of 630 tonnes generated a day would be cleared then and there.
