BENGALURU: A 47-year-old woman and 10 members of an interstate gang of dacoits she had hired to target two women were arrested on Sunday.
Prime accused Girijamma and the two women — Narasamma, 67, and her daughter-in-law Prabhavati — lived in the same building in Konanakunte’s Old Bank Colony for several years.
Girijamma’s arrested associates are Raju alias Dichchi Raju, 51, Raghuvaran, 30, Suresh C, 36, and Lingaraju S, 34, all of whom are residents of Konanakunte in south Bengaluru. Stephen Raj, 25, Manikanthan, 25, Satish A, 20, Rajesh S, 21, Abdul Samad, 29 and Satish Kumar, 24, are from Tamil Nadu.
Girijamma ran a chit-fund business and incurred heavy losses. She discussed her financial problems with friend Dichchi Raju, who convinced her to identify two home-alone women for his gang to rob, police said.
“Girijamma then zeroed in on Narasamma and Prabhavati, who had lost their husbands and stayed together. Prabhavati was a tailor. Raju and his gang struck the women’s residence and took away 298gm of gold on August 28,” a police officer said.

Preliminary investigation revealed three men had barged into Narasamma’s residence, overpowered the women and snatched their gold before escaping. Konanakunte police questioned several inmates of the building and found Girijamma’s behaviour suspicious. “The investigators checked CCTV footage of nearby buildings and found the three men who had entered the building on the day of the robbery were roaming in the locality a few days ago. Police tracked Girijamma’s phone calls to Raju and picked her up for questioning. She confessed to the crime and we arrested all 10 members of Raju’s gang,” a police officer said.
With the arrests, police claimed to have solved two similar dacoities in Malleswaram and Kadugodi. Two-wheelers, an autorickshaw, gold and silver articles were seized from the gang.
