ALLAHABAD: Days after the state government banned the use of
plastic thinner than 50 micron across UP, two religious trusts have decided to turn
Ganpati Utsav pandals into no plastic zones.
In a first,
Lokmanya Tilak Lok Sewa Trust and
Maharastra Lok Sewa Mandal in Alopibagh have banned the use of plastic products inside their pandals during the 10-day celebrations, starting Monday.
The organisers have put up banners at the entrance of the two pandals, warning visitors to not use plastic products inside.
The two trusts have also created artificial ponds for '
visarjan' to spread the word about the importance of ridding Ganga of pollutants.
The organisers have also appealed to the visitors to not bring plastic bags or plastic products inside the pandal.
Maharastra Lok Sewa Mandal secretary Satish Pouranick said, “We are trying to create awareness among the masses. By banning plastic from our pandal, we are encouraging more people to give up plastic.”
“Instead of the usual polybags, visitors are being encouraged to switch to
jute and cloth bags. We are also strictly following noise pollution standards,” he added.
Meanwhile, the 10 day long celebration of Ganesh
Chaturthi began here on Monday with devotees visiting pandals and offering prayers. Special arti sessions were also organised .
Over 100 small and big pandals have been set up across the city. The police authorities have chalked out a security plan for visitors and checked fire fighting arrangements.
