BJP MP Arjun Singh sustained head injuries Sunday after Barrackpore Police Commissioner Manoj Verma allegedly hit him on his head during clashes with the police in Jagaddal area.

The incident took place when BJP workers were staging protests in various parts of the district after the parliamentarian’s car was ransacked earlier in the day. Cops from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Singh also alleged that he was abused by the top cop during the clashes. He claimed that there were reports of his house under attack.

“At first, my vehicle was attacked. Barrackpore Police Commissioner Manoj Verma hit me with sticks when we were protesting against the incident. Now, I heard that my house is being attacked. I have received about 10 to 12 stitches,” Singh said after coming out of a local hospital.

However, state minister and senior TMC leader Jyotipriya Mullick cried foul and said Verma was not present at the spot at the time of the incident. “These are baseless allegations. The police commissioner was not at the incident spot. Arjun Singh is lying. He is responsible for the violence today,” he said.

Meanwhile, BJP has called for a 12-hour bandh on Monday in Barrackpore from 6 am to 6 pm to protest against the attack on Arjun Singh. A reaction from the police was not available.

The clash between the police and BJP supporters comes a week after West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh asked party workers to take revenge when attacked by Trinamool Congress workers and beat them up. Ghosh also asked workers not to spare TMC workers or policemen.
