MSRTC: Private bus fares more than double

MSRTC bus
MUMBAI: Private bus operators have reportedly hiked their fares on some Konkan-route buses to profit from the rush of passengers travelling to their native towns for Ganpati. Fares have gone up to Rs 2,000-2,500, sources said, which is more than double the usual fare. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) plies a large number of extra buses to cater to the rush during this festival season.

Sources said that while a trip to Ratnagiri on an MSRTC bus could cost Rs 450-500, private operators were charging upto Rs 1,100 for non-AC and more than Rs 1,500 for AC trips this week. Similarly, to go to Sawantwadi or Malvan, the MSRTC fare would be around Rs 650-750, but private operators were charging as much as Rs 1,500-2,000.
Last year, a state notification capped private bus fares at "a maximum 50%" more than MSRTC fares. For instance, if the MSRTC fare on a route is Rs 1,000, a private operator can charge a maximum of Rs 1,500 for the same.
