JAIPUR: From perfumes, shirts, wall hangings and clocks, a person gets a variety of gifts from his colleagues on retirement day. But Navrang Lal Bhaskar, headmaster of government middle school at Aacharayon Ki Dhani, a non-descriptive hamlet in
Sikar district, received saplings as parting gift.
Bhaskar has not only planted more than 200 saplings in the school, but his love for trees is known across the village.
Born in a family of farmers, Bhaskar always found peace and solace when he is in his farm. However, from 1985 he ensured that he should not only plant saplings in schools he was posted, but should also take care of the plants. “It is very important to plant trees in Rajasthan as it has often been a victim of drought. Usually people plant saplings, get some pictures clicked and forget about it. Come to my school, I will show the saplings I had planted 10 years ago which are now fully grown trees,” he added.
On Saturday, his last day in school, a large number of villagers from Aacharoyon Ki Dhani and nearby areas thronged to the school to offer their gratitude towards this teacher.
“I was glad to see that nearly 150 saplings I had planted on the school premises 10 years ago became fully grown trees. During these years, I along with my staff took care of the saplings like our children,” said Bhaskar while talking to TOI over phone from Bari village of Sikar, his native place.
Not only that, two months prior to his retirement, Bhaskar wanted to do something which could bring him again and again to this school. “I had planted 200 saplings a month ago and would love to keep coming to the school to take care of these plants,” he added.
During his retirement function, locals recalled when the teacher skipped his summer vacation to plant trees. “During summer vacations, we had always seen him in the school along with his trees,” said Naresh Suthar, a villager.
“My village is merely 1 km away from the school I was posted for past 10 years. Thus, it became my habit to visit the school every day even during vacations to take care of my trees,” he further added.
