Rain spoils last-minute shopping plans of devotees

Hyderabad: Heavy rains lashed parts of the city on Sunday, playing a spoilsport for shoppers ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi. Several people, who stepped out of their houses for buying Ganesha idols and other necessary items for the festival, were either stuck in traffic on waterlogged roads or got drenched in rain at busy market places.
Mayank Kumar, a resident of Yousufguda, said, “We had decided to finish shopping for Ganesh Chaturthi today (Sunday), but heavy rains spoiled our plan. As we left for the market in the evening, it started pouring and within minutes we got drenched and had to return home.”
Vedika Agarwal, a school teacher, too said she couldn’t got shopping due to heavy rain.“I had planned to do festival shopping with my children as most places will be crowded on the festival day. But we had to cancel our plan in the evening as it started raining.”
The two-hour rain dampened the festive mood as several areas were left inundated and Ganesha idol makers were seen struggling to protect the idols. “The freshly made idols need to be dry before they are painted, but the rain made it difficult and the paint on most of the idols got dissolved due to rain water. We are left with no time to sculpt or paint them again,” rued P Surender, an idol maker in Erragadda.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department, Hyderabad, released an advisory stating that under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Odisha and Bay of Bengal, the southwest monsoon is active to vigorous over Telangana.
Giving special weather forecast for the festival, the IMD advised public, especially those making arrangements at pandals, to be cautions. “Widespread rains of light to moderate intensity are expected during the next three days over entire Telangana with possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in North and Eastern Telangana. Wet days are very likely around Ganesh festival time with one or two spells of moderate rain in Hyderabad city too,” the forecast said.
