Assam woman 'kills self' over NRC rumours

GUWAHATI: A 60-year-old woman in Assam's Sonitpur district committed suicide on Saturday - much before the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) was released at 10 am - after reportedly falling prey to rumours that her husband and two sons had been excluded.
The woman - identified as Shayera Begum - allegedly killed herself by jumping into a well in her house in Dolabari village. Sonitpur Police however said she was mentally unstable. "We were told she jumped into a well and committed suicide. Later, we found that the names of her kin - missing from the draft NRC - have been included in the final list."
