Lt Gen Naravane is a recipient of ‘Sena Medal’ (Distinguished), Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Param Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished services.Lieutenant General Manoj Mukund Naravane, who is from Pune, assumed the charge of Vice Chief of the Army Staff on Sunday. An alumnus of the Jnana Prabodhini Prashala in Pune and the National Defence Academy, the General Officer was the Eastern Army Commander of the Indian Army before taking the charge.
Lt Gen Naravane succeeds Lt Gen Devraj Anbu, who superannuated on Saturday. Besides the NDA, Lt Gen Naravane is an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy and was commissioned into the 7th Battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in June 1980. His father is retired from the Indian Air Force while his mother was a writer and news broadcaster with the All Indian Radio in Pune and passed away last year.
A press statement from the Indian Army on Lt Gen Naravane’s appointment said, “He brings with him an enormous amount of experience in serving in the most challenging areas. In a distinguished military career spanning almost four decades, he has the distinction of holding key appointments in active Counter Insurgency environments, both in the North East and Jammu and Kashmir and was part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka during Operation Pawan. He also has had the opportunity of serving as a Defence Attache at the Indian Embassy in Myanmar for three years.”
