KALYAN: Two history-sheeters allegedly tried to kill a policeman by dashing their vehicle against him while fleeing on a busy road here on Friday. Constable Amol Gore is serious in Fortis hospital's ICU. The accused had allegedly come near a bank to loot customers by diverting their attention, when police tried to nab them.
Abbas Ukani alias Raju alias Datta Shinde and Mukesh Menon, who have been booked for attempt to murder, are involved in around 50 cases in
Maharashtra and Gujarat, of which they were earlier arrested in 30 cases.
Police sources said due to a recent rise in cases of gangs targeting bank customers by diverting their attention, an anti-robbery squad was on patrol. They noticed Ukani outside Kotak Bank, going to
HDFC Bank, around 50 metres away, while Menon was waiting in a car.
An official said, "When we went to nab the accused, Ukani fled to the car. He instructed Menon to drive and hit Gore, who had come in front."
The accused fled in the car, while other policemen rushed Gore to hospital.
Mahatma Phule police have registered an attempt to murder case against the duo and Thane police have formed teams to nab them.
Assistant commissioner of police (Kalyan region) Anil Powar said, "We have formed teams and we are hopeful of nabbing the accused very soon."
Ukani and Menon have been arrested several times by Gujarat, Pune and Thane police. After getting bail, they repeat the crimes and are wanted in around 20 more cases.
Police said Ukani uses various identities and carries bogus identity proof to avoid getting caught.
