MUMBAI: Hundreds of youngsters created eco-friendly Ganeshas out of the silt and earth from
Mithi River and
Powai Lake this festive season. This colourful idols will later be immersed back in these water bodies during the Ganeshotsav, thereby sending out the message of zero waste and total recycling.
“The
young environmentalists programme sensitises the community about the oceans. Our ecological movement must help murtiwalas (professional idol makers) to survive economically and increase their efficiency,” said founder of Young Environmentalists Programme Trust Elsie Gabriel.
She further gave the details on what one can do on the Ganesha festival season. “Mind your carbon footprint and reduce energy consumption. Reduce the effects of climate change on the ocean by leaving the car at home when you can walk to the waterbody for immersion visits. Be conscious of your energy use at home and work, especially during this festive season. Switch to compact fluorescent lighting decoration bulbs,'' said Gabriel.
Also, make safe, sustainable seafood choices, global fish populations are rapidly being depleted due to demand, loss of habitat, and unsustainable fishing practices. When shopping or dining out, help reduce the demand for overexploited species by choosing seafood that is both healthful and sustainable.
Use fewer plastic products“Plastics decorations during this season that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and entangle and kill tens of thousands of marine animals each year. To limit your impact, carry a reusable garbage bag to bring some non degradable items back. Use metal water bottles, store food in non-disposable containers, bring your own cloth tote or other reusable bags when shopping, and recycle whenever possible,'' said another young environmentalists member.
They also pointed out that certain products contribute to the harming of fragile coral reefs and marine populations. Avoid purchasing items such as coral jewelry, tortoiseshell hair accessories (made from hawksbill turtles), and shark products.
