Surat: Young cyclist mowed down by bus; driver arrested

SURAT: A young boy riding a bicycle was crushed to death by a bus on Rander Road in the city on Saturday. His friend, riding pillion on the bicycle, was flung aside but escaped with minor injuries.

The bus driver, who fled from the spot, was produced in court by police on Sunday. Mehul Rabari, 13, was going on bicycle from Jagadia Chowkdi to Vrindavan Flats in Ugat when a City Link bus plying on route no 107 and being driven by Rakesh Makwana hit him at around 7.15pm on Saturday. The rear wheels of the bus ran over the boy, crushing him to death.
Makwana abandoned the bus and fled from the spot, surrendering later at Rander police station. A crowd gathered at the spot and shouted slogans against the bus operator. City Link officials said Makwana was driving the bus at 23km per hour and that he could not apply brakes as the child on the bicycle had surfaced suddenly. A police officer said, “We have booked the driver for causing death by negligence, causing hurt to someone by reckless driving and under Motor Vehicles Act. If guilty, the accused will not go unpunished.
