Ahmedabad: Caught stealing petrol, brothers set youth ablaze

AHMEDABAD: Pankaj Patil, 20, was called out from his home and set ablaze with kerosene by two brothers, Pradeep and Naresh Amarsingh, because Patil had rebuked the duo after he caught them stealing petrol from a bike. The crime occurred on Sunday evening near Ujala Society in Isanpur. Police sources said Patil has suffered 85% burns and is being treated in LG Hospital. His condition is extremely critical.
Inspector J M Solanki of Isanpur police station said they have registered a case of attempt to murder against the two brothers and arrested them.

Victim’s father Pandurang Patil said, “My son is in a critical condition and has little chance of surviving.”
Police sources said Patil, who works in a private company happened to chance upon the two brothers on Saturday night when they were stealing petrol from a bike parked outside Ujala Society. “He reprimanded them and then went home,” said a police official.
Solanki said that next day, Pradeep and Amaringh — armed with a kerosene carboy came to Pankaj’s house and started quarrelling with him. Pankaj’s family members came out to intervene, but by that time Pradeep had already thrown kerosene on Pankaj and his brother had set him ablaze with a match.

Eyewitnesses said that within seconds, Pankaj was engulfed in flames. “We tried to douse the flames by throwing mud and blankets on him. Then we called 108 ambulance service and shifted him LG Hospital. Doctors said that there is little chance of Pankaj surviving as he has sustained 85 % burns,” said Pankaj’s father Pandurang Patil.
Inspector Solanki said, “We have nabbed both the accused and are interrogating them. As of now the we have registered a case under Section 307 for attempt to murder, but Section 302 will be added if the victim doesn’t survive.”
