KOLKATA: Yet another organ donation took place at a city private hospital late on Sunday evening, taking the donation count in August to four. The liver of a 61-year-old woman, who was declared brain-dead at Medica Superspecialty Hospital on Saturday night, was donated for a recipient. The transplant surgery at R N Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) is set to continue till the early hours of Monday. Doctors were confident of a successful transplant, which will be the eighth in Kolkata this year.
Bansdroni resident Shelly Dey was admitted to Medica on August 23 with a brain haemorrhage. Late on Saturday night, she was declared brain-dead and her family agreed to donate her organs. Her heart and kidneys were unfit for donation. Doctors, however, found that her liver was in a good condition and prepared to extract it. The hospital had the recipient ready.
While this is the fourth transplant in August, the count was not healthy at the beginning of the year. Till this month, the city had seen just eight transplants which was low compared to last year’s 15. It had left both hospitals and those associated with transplants worried. But four in succession this month has brought the momentum back. “There had been a lull, but things are gathering pace. More transplants will encourage more families to come forward and donate organs,” said a transplant activist.

The last organ transplant in Kolkata took place at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital on August 23. A 48-year-old’s kidneys were donated. On August 20, a 57-year-old woman’s liver was transplanted at Apollo after she suffered brain death at SSKM Hospital. Her kidneys were transplanted at SSKM.
On August 14, a 19-year-old girl’s liver was transplanted at Apollo Gleneagles after she suffered a brain death at the same hospital.
