KOLKATA: Raghib Parwez (25) — the
Jaguar accident accused — was released from a Dubai hospital on August 19 and returned to Kolkata with his mother after she pleaded with doctors that he was fine enough to undertake the journey. A day after TOI reported that Raghib’s mother had accompanied him to Dubai, it has surfaced that his mother took the decision to bring him back to the city, 48 hours after they left.
“Just like they went together, they returned to Kolkata by the same flight. Md Hamza, Raghib’s maternal uncle, received them at the airport on August 19. Hence, the claim that no one in the family was aware of his return does not hold water,” said police. However, cops have reiterated that Raghib’s mother had accompanied him merely on health grounds and was not the executioner of the plan.
All this while, the mother-son duo kept minimum contact with people in India, except close family members. “Both Raghib and his friend, who was in the car when the accident took place, had not spoken to each other ever since the accident. His friend was so tense that he switched off his mobile for the next couple of days,” said an officer.
Police said that they have now identified the three drivers whom some extended family members had approached to take the blame for the accident even as final preparations were being made to send Raghib to Dubai.
“Raghib’s father was told he was in a safe place. But initially, the Dubai part of the plan was not shared with him as they knew he would object. There were three reasons for not producing the drivers before the cops — no one agreed to share the blame, everyone knew that it would be difficult to convince cops that a driver was speeding so late at night and finally, a section of the family was against framing anyone in the case,” police said.
The top brass, though, said everyone in the family was under scanner. “Everyone’s role and motive is under scanner. The explanation by the family does not appear fool proof. Extensive questioning of Raghib and his family members will follow,” said Sharma.
Police said they would apply for the TI Parade of Raghib. “The statement of his friend from Salt Lake, who was in the same car, will be recorded before a magistrate at the earliest,” said an officer.
