2010 sedition case: Maoist leader Kobad Ghandy arrested in Surat

SURAT: Surat rural police arrested Maoist leader Kobad Ghandy, 68, on Monday in 2010 sedition case registered in Kamrej police station. Police had registered a case against the suspects involved in alleged Maoist activities in the region. They were booked for allegedly developing a sleeper cell in south Gujarat to provide safe shelter to the active Maoist activists.
Kobad Ghandy, leader of CPI (Maoist) is the 23rd accused arrested in the case so far. He was brought to Surat by Jharkhand police. He was produced in a local court and rural police took his custody. He has been sent to a hospital for medical examination and rural police are likely to seek his custody for questioning.

Since the case was registered, police have arrested many operatives and sympathisers. Police had booked the Maoist activists who have visited the region or provided support in developing a network there. Of them few were tribals of south Gujarat who provided safe hideouts to the active Maoists who have escaped from the violence affected area after executing some attacks.
In 2017, the police had arrested Tushar alias Kanti alias Shreekant alias Prakash Harnath Bhattacharya. All the accused arrested so far were granted bail by the court.
