CHENNAI: A man died and four others suffered injuries in an
explosion at Manampathi near Thiruporur in
Kancheepuram district of
Tamil Nadu on Sunday evening.
Police are probing whether it was a machine or a bomb that exploded near the Gangai Amman
temple in Manampathi, situated around 50km from Chennai.
The deceased has been identified as Surya, 23. The injured -- Dilip Raghavan, 22, Thirumal, 22, Yuvaraj, 22, Jayaram, 23 -- have been hospitalised.
The explosion happened when the villagers were desilting a tank belonging to Gangai Amman temple.
Preliminary reports said Surya had brought some machine from the tank and placed it near the temple. It exploded when he tried to open it.
"We are unclear as to what exactly happened," said an investigating officer.
A forensic team and a bomb squad inspected the scene.
