JJMP (Jharkhand Jana Mukti Parishad)
rebel Binod Singh Kherwar in Bakoriya village under Satbarwa police station in neighbouring
Palamu district.
Acting on a tip-off, the cops went to Kherwar’s house to arrest him, but after his family members denied entry to them, they allegedly entered the house by breaking the ventilator. They snatched Kherwar’s daughter from his wife Babita Kumari’s lap and threw her on the floor. The toddler died on the spot. The police team left in a hurry, said the girl’s family. The girl’s body was sent for post mortem on Saturday.
Speaking to TOI outside the morgue, Kherwar said, “A team of Manika police and CRPF raided my house on Friday night. They banged on my door asking me to open it. I sell liquor illegally at my house and thus, we got scared and didn’t open the door. But they killed my daughter.”
When asked if he is associated with JJMP, as claimed by the police, Kherwar said, “If I am affiliated with any rebel group, will I be staying at my home?” The family has not filed any complaint yet.
Latehar SP Prashant Anand said a probe has been ordered. “All the facts are being verified and looked into seriously. At this stage, I cannot jump to any conclusion. A case has to be lodged with Palamu’s Satbarwa police station.”
When asked if Kherwar’s house was raided by Manika police and CRPF, Anand denied giving orders for the same. “I did not order the raid. I came to know of it and the child’s death only this morning.”
Palamu SP Ajay Linda said an inquiry by Satbarwa police has begun. “The inquiry will be neutral. Let the family file a complaint first.”
IG (CRPF) Jharkhand Sanjay Anand Lathkar said, “The incident was brought to my notice on Saturday morning. I have spoken to DIG Palamu Vipul Shukla for details. There will be a transparent inquiry and anyone found guilty will be put to task.” He added that senior officials of 133 battalion of CRPF, based in Ranchi, have reached Latehar for a probe.
