Caste clash erupts in Tamil Nadu’s Vedaranyam

A clash erupted between two groups in Nagapattinam district
NAGAPATTINAM: Tension prevailed in Vedaranyam and surrounding areas in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu following clashes between thevars and dalits on Sunday evening.
According to police sources, a clash erupted between a group belonging to the thevars and dalits around 5pm.
A gang torched a car owned by a man from the dominant caste. In retaliation, another gang desecrated an Ambedkar statue near a bus stand at Vedaranyam.

A dalit, identified as Ramachandran of Vedaranyam, sustained injuries. He was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvaur.
Condemning that desecration of the Ambedkar statue, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi members staged protests in Nagapattinam, Nagore and Thirumarugal. Police personnel have been deployed in and around Vedaranyam town.
