Water supply on alternate days from September

With the water level in Vaigai dam crossing 50 feet on Saturday, the Corporation plans to switch back to alternate day water supply from September first week.

An official said that the Corporation Commissioner would make an announcement to this effect in a couple of days after a high-level meeting. Citing rainfall deficit and depleting water level in Vaigai dam, the Corporation started supplying water once in four days in the old wards from mid-July.

Since then, the level in the dam has doubled and on Sunday, it stood at 50.95 feet with an inflow of 1,112 cusecs. While the Bureau of Indian Standards 1172: 1993, reaffirmed in 1998, stipulates 150-200 lpcd (Litres per Capita per Day) as the basic requirement for a resident, the Corporation presently supplies only 90 lpcd.

In the last two weeks, residents have been demanding the civic body to supply drinking water on alternate days. “For the last two years, we have not been receiving adequate drinking water and the situation has only worsened now. We are forced to buy packaged drinking water,” said N. Sethupathi, a resident of Vadivelan Street (ward 57).
