Travel guide Lonely Planet has released the latest edition of their ultimate UK travel experiences - and North Wales features heavily.

The new book, which ranks the top 500 unmissable sights and experiences across Britain, Ireland and the Channel Islands.

Of all the entries listed in the guide, a total of 47 are found in Wales - with many of these located in the north.

A total of 19 of the regions places made the cut - almost 4% of the entire list - with Snowdon ranking highest of them all.

Other highly commended attractions include the Italianette village of Portmeirion, the UNESCO heritage sites of Caernarfon Castle and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and several of the region's historical properties.

Lonely Planet's vice-president of experience, Tom Hall, said: "Lonely Planet's Ultimate United Kingdom Travelist brings together the UK's most compelling sights and experiences, ranging from world-class museums and giant cathedrals to rollicking festivals, inky lochs and tiny pubs."

The coveted number one spot went to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, followed by the British Museum in London.

Third place went to the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.
