Bryan Hughes has hailed the addition of Ben Tollitt to his Wrexham squad, and revealed talks were on going behind the scenes to extend his stint at the Racecourse.

Tollitt joined Wrexham on an initial short term 28 day loan spell on Friday afternoon , a deal hurriedly arranged between the Dragons and his parent club Blackpool to ensure international clearance would be received for the 24-year-old to be available for the bank holiday weekend double header against Barnet and Hartlepool United.

The winger, who made 13 appearances for Wrexham on loan last season , and scored four times, came off the bench to replace Paul Rutherford on 67 minutes in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the Racecourse with Barnet .

“He is an excellent signing,” said Hughes. “We know exactly what Tols can do. In his eight starts for me last season he got three goals from a wide position.

“I have not brought him in just to get goals, I want assists, I want him to drive us forward. We’ve got Mark Harris on one side as well, Bobby Grant coming back (from suspension), Rutherford, Devonte (Redmond), we’ve got good options in those areas, so he just adds to it.

“Ben hasn’t had a lot of game time over the last few weeks so it was important to get him on and give him that 30-35 minutes, and I am sure we will see the benefit of that over the next few weeks.”

Last season saw Tollitt join Wrexham on an initial short term loan spell in the build up to Christmas, the winger making his debut in the Boxing Day 5-1 mauling of Salford City .

His short term loan was extended by then manager Graham Barrow , before Hughes extended his spell to a third month, the maximum allowed under league rules for short term loans .

And Hughes also revealed the club were looking to make Tollitt’s deal ‘a longer term’.

The Dragons boss added: “We moved on Ben quickly yesterday (Friday), it was 3pm when he was made available for us, and we had to move quick. The quickest way to get him over the line and get him involved for this weekend was to do a short term loan.

“We are going to be looking at that once the game (Hartlepool on Monday) is out of the way to make it a longer term.”
