KOLKATA: In a-twist-a-day Jaguar-Mercedes crash case, police have now stumbled upon evidence that shows Raghib Parwez’s mother had travelled with him to Dubai hours after the accident on August 17. It was she who had got him admitted to Badr Al Sama Hospital there for treating injuries Raghib had suffered in the high-speed crash. The entire logistics for the trip and stay in Dubai had been managed by Md Hamza, Raghib’s maternal uncle.

On Saturday, police took Raghib back to Theatre Road-Loudon Street intersection, the spot from where he had fled exactly a week ago. There, they made him reconstruct the incident that had led to the death of two Bangladeshi tourists.
The cops also managed to recover two phones belonging to the 25-year-old from the bashed up Jaguar F-Pace. One of them — an iPhone — was synced with the SUV. This is further evidence that Raghib was driving the vehicle when the crash took place. Police also recovered a pair of spectacles that they believe belongs to the co-passenger, a friend of Raghib and junior in school who is now the prime witness.
When Raghib had fled the scene, he had carried another phone with him, also an iPhone. He had used this phone to contact Hamza after he reached Mullick Bazaar. While driving to Salt Lake in the latter’s car, Raghib had made a series of phone calls, including a couple to his family. “We are questioning Raghib to ascertain the contents of these conversations,” said a senior officer.
Joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma said Raghib had helped reconstruct what had transpired on that fateful night. “His (Raghib’s) statements match those of his friend with whom we carried out a similar reconstruction exercise on Friday. We will now pray in court next week to get this friend’s statement recorded before a magistrate at the earliest,” he said.

The cops said the scientific wing of Kolkata Police had found CCTV footage of both youths while trying to retrace their steps that night. “Once Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc, the car’s company in the UK, responds to our query and provides us the vehicle speed data, we will match the timings and draw up a graph of his average speed to check if he was speeding all through,” explained an officer.
Police have now begun a probe into the 48 signal violations recorded against the car. “The infotainment and telematics data system fitted in the Jaguar has provided us a detailed log of the car. Through this, we know the exact time and date when Raghib was driving this car. We will match them with the traffic violations. If we can prove that he was a habitual traffic rule violator, it further strengthens our case,” an officer said, adding that Kolkata Police had sought the help of their counterparts in Bidhannagar Commissionerate to check the Porsche accident there in 2017. The supercar is also registered in the name of the company owned by Raghib’s father.
