HUBBALLI: Hubballi-Dharwad Development Forum (HDDF), an advocacy and facilitation group for industrial development in the region was inaugurated on Saturday. It is a citizens’ forum consisting of prominent people from local industries and other professionals.
Union minister for parliamentary affairs, mines and coal Pralhad Joshi and state minister Jagadish Shettar inaugurated the forum at BVB campus.
Speaking on the occasion, HDDF vice chairman Ashok Shettar said, “After a gap of 36 years, both the state and the Union governments are being ruled by the same political party and this opportunity has to be utilised for the betterment of the underdeveloped region.”
Ashok alleged that all these years the state, especially north Karnataka received meagre funds and was neglected patronage in all respects.
The forum submitted a memorandum to both ministers urging them to accord special investment region (SIR) status to Hubballi-Dharwad by enacting state act on the lines of Gujarat SIR Act-2009.
They also urged that a land bank of 20,000 acres be created to host industries and said Dharwad must get priority on the Bengaluru-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. The forum urged the ministers to develop Durgadkeri Industrial Area as a defence park and said it was a perfect location for manufacturing units. It is adjacent to the Pune Bengaluru National Highway Golden Quadrilateral and it is equidistant from both Hubballi and Belagavi, they added.
They also advised the ministers to reserve Gamangatti and Itigatti Industrial areas for IT and electronics industries. “This is the last land strip available between the twin cities and it is ideal for the IT sector,” Ashok said.
Ashok Shettar and other HDDF members tried to convince the ministers about the formation of a regional industrial development authority.
They said the existing system was too Bengaluru centric and that the single window system at the district level was not working. For the development of industries, a Dharwad regional industrial development authority should be formed, they urged.

After listening to the members, Joshi said, “The Union government is extending all possible help to industries. In the past five years, the twin cities have been put on the trajectory of development. Hubballi has many hospitals and hundreds of specialists are available. The city can be developed as a destination for health tourism.”
Joshi said the Hubballi airport was registering good footfalls and more routes would be opened in the coming days.
