FOXBORO – After a promising start this offseason, Maurice Harris’ time with the Patriots could be coming to an end.

On Sunday, the Patriots released the veteran receiver with an injury designation. Harris, who signed a one-year deal this offseason, had a terrific start with the team, but suffered a lower body injury during the Patriots joint practices with the Tennessee Titans.

Since the injury, Harris hasn’t appeared in a preseason game and has either missed practice or been limited. At the same time, the Patriots also added Julian Edelman, Demaryius Thomas and Josh Gordon to the roster.

If Harris clears waivers, he could spend the season on the Patriots injured reserve. Since he signed a one-year contract, the Patriots could also eventually release him with an injury settlement in order for him to find another job.

At one point this offseason, Harris looked like the Patriots best receiver. This came at a point in OTAs and minicamp where the Pats didn’t have the bulk of their veterans (Edelman, Thomas or Gordon). Still, Harris impressed with his ability to play in the slot and outside the numbers. He also showed off solid hands.

In the end, the best ability is availability and Harris’ setback might have cost him a job with the Patriots.
