Goa: IMD predicts heavy rainfall over next two days

On Friday, Goa received the second highest spell of rain since August 16
PANAJI: The India meteorological department (IMD), Altinho, Panaji, has issued a heavy rainfall warning fora few places in the state on August 26 and 27, even as the last 24 hours witnessed the second-heaviest spell across the state since August 16.
The average rainfall of 44mm recorded in Goa during the 24-hour spell till Saturday morning is considered moderate. However, compared to the 48mm rainfall on August 16, it was the second highest spell during the second fortnight.The monsoon is likely to enter another vigorous phase with IMD, Panaji, forecasting light to moderate rainfall during the next five days.
On Monday and Tuesday, most places may receive heavy rainfall.

"The models are showing heavy rainfall in a few places for two days," Krishnamurty Padgalwar, director, IMD, said. While two centres, Mapusa and Panaji received heavy rainfall of 65mm each during the last 24 hours, Old Goa recorded 60mm, Sanguem 43mm, Quepem 42.6mm, Mormugao 40.6mm, Sakhali 37.4 and Valpoi 37.2mm.
Other centres recorded rain on a lesser scale while figures of Margao and Ponda were not available. The seasonal total has jumped to 3129.7mm (123 inches) as compared to a normal of 2568mm (101 inches) at this stage. This has boosted the surplus to 22%, as per information by the local meteorological centre that the monsoon this year would be above normal.
