Tirupur: A 41-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for stealing 19 tonnes of fabric from several knitwear units in the city.
Police identified him as R Vel Alagan of Komarapalayam in Namakkal district. “He was running an agency that would collect raw fabrics from garment units in Tirupur and get them dyed in dyeing units in Erode and Namakkal. Since the dyeing costs were slightly cheaper in the units in those districts than those in Tirupur, many garment units would prefer them. Alagan was doing the business for more than 10 years. Recently, 10 garment units had handed over fabrics to him. But Alagan failed to deliver the dyed fabrics on time, despite continuous warnings,” a police officer said.
The unit owners could not reach Alagan since June. They came to know that their fabrics were not sent to the dyeing units. Investigation confirmed that Alagan had stolen them. Subsequently, the owners submitted a complaint before city police commissioner Sanjay Kumar.
Central crime branch police registered a case against Alagan under sections 417, 420 and 467 of IPC. After his arrest, police found that he had stolen 19 tonnes of fabric from the units and sold them in second sales markets.TNN
