Collector T.G. Vinay on Sunday said desilting and rehabilitation of water bodies would be completed before the onset of the northeast monsoon in the district.
Inspecting the ongoing desilting works near Thoothur, Kamarasavalli and Guruvadi near Thirumanur, he said Pullambadi Main Canal, which received water supply from the left bank of the Cauvery in Upper Anicut, was the main source of water to 25 lakes in the district.
The Public Works department (PWD) had taken up rehabilitation works under the Chief Minister’s Special Scheme for desiltation and rehabilitaiton. The bunds of lakes would also be strengthened. It was important to complete the works before the onset of monsoon. Hence, officials had been instructed to expedite the works. Periodic inspections should be carried out to monitor the progress of works, he added.
