RFID: Sirhaul spared snarls on a weekend

Gurgaon: Chaos and confusion prevailed at Sirhaul toll plaza on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on Saturday as commercial vehicles queued up on one side of the high-speed corridor to obtain radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, which are now mandatory for them to enter the national capital. However, being a weekend, the toll plaza did not witness any traffic congestion.
Commercial vehicle owners, who were busy filling up forms and taking pictures of their vehicles in order to obtain the tag, said some of them had to travel a long distance to get the same. “I had no information about the tag system. Another driver informed me in the morning and I had to travel all the way from Bhiwani to Gurgaon to get the tag,” said Krishna Kumar, a driver.
Another driver, Ravinder, said, “The process of obtaining a tag is tedious and time-consuming. People like us who work every day hardly get time for these things.”
Few drivers said they were aware of the mandatory RFID tags, but chose to buy the same at the last minute as they needed to save money. “I saved some money in the last few days before applying for the tag at Sirhaul border. Anyway, I am not going to earn any money on Saturday because of the time-consuming process of obtaining the RFID tag,” said Govind Ram, a driver who came from Jaipur.
However, some commercial vehicle owners went to Aya Nagar toll plaza to obtain the tag.
“We finally got the RFID tag after being in the queue for more than three hours. We came from Delhi. I have around 20 commercial vehicles. I visited some of the other toll plazas for the last three days but it was difficult to apply because of the huge rush there,” said Sachin Yadav, a transporter.

Drivers said it’s taking around 15 to 20 minutes to obtain the tag after submitting the form with the centre. “I was asked to pay Rs 236 for one tag. I travelled to Delhi for this tag which took me the entire day. The government should open more centres for the tag,” said Satish Kumar, a mini-truck owner.
Meanwhile, the toll operators had a hard day at work as they had to explain the system to the commercial drivers. “It was very difficult to make the drivers aware of the changes in the first half of the day. Most of them were not aware of the tag and its cost,” said a toll operator at Aya Nagar.
