NEW DELHI: A 36-year-old executive at a multinational firm was killed while his 33-year-old cousin was battling for life after the scooty they were riding, on the wrong lane, crashed into the side rails, throwing them off the Barapullah flyover near Sarai Kale Khan on Saturday evening.
DCP (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said the victim was identified as Rohit Makol, head of the training team at an MNC in Noida. His cousin Pradeep Kumar Madan, who lives in Gwalior, is in a critical condition at the AIIMS trauma centre.
While a probe is on, cops suspect the men lost control of the vehicle and fell into the Barapullah drain below. Makol’s helmet was not tied properly and it came off, leading to severe head injuries.
Cops said the two were returning from Noida and were riding on the wrong side, possibly to avoid traffic. The possibility of the two-wheeler being hit by another vehicle hasn’t been ruled out.
Investigating teams are scanning the CCTV cameras on the flyover to ascertain the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal crash. A team of forensic experts also inspected the site and have collected evidence to zero down on the cause.
Police received a PCR call at 5pm from a Barapullah flyover loop that goes to the DND flyway. The caller told cops that two men who were riding a scooty on the wrong side of the road had fallen into the Barapullah drain below.
Fourth case of bikers falling off flyover
By the time an emergency team reached the spot, passersby had taken two men to the AIIMS trauma centre. When the cops reached there, they were told that one of the men was declared dead on arrival while the other was battling critical injuries.
At the flyover, cops found a damaged Suzuki Access scooty, bearing the registration number HR 05AA 9882. It belonged to Makol. A broken helmet was also found lying on side rails.
Makol had come to NCR from Karnal, where his parents live. Madan, who lives in Gwalior, had recently come to visit his cousin over the long weekend. The duo had decided to go for a joyride in the evening since Makol was not working that day.
A case under IPC sections 279 (dangerous driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304A (causing death due to negligence) has been registered at the Sunlight Colony police station.
This is the fourth incident in the last 12 months when two-wheeler riders have fallen off flyovers in the capital.
Driving on the wrong lane remains a primary reason for such accidents, according to cops, who said that fast moving vehicles often enter in the slowest lane, which is also the outermost in the flyovers, wrongfully, and hit two-wheelers.
