PUNE: The long-pending process to shift the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC)’s Shivajinagar bus terminus to the government milk dairy land in Wakdewadi will begin next month.
MahaMetro officials said they have started construction of a makeshift bus terminus and maintenance depot at the Wakdewadi plot, along the Mumbai-Pune highway. The work will be completed by next month and operations can begin in October.
The MSRTC will begin operations from the Wakdewadi terminus to make way for the underground Metro work at the existing Shivajinagar terminus. The MahaMetro has already started with the civil work. But it will also require the land of terminus and depot.
The MSRTC’s Shivajinagar bus terminus operates over 1,000 buses every day on key routes like Marathwada, Vidarbha, Nashik, Mumbai and Konkan.
An official from MahaMetro said, “A memorandum of understanding in this regard was recently signed with the MSRTC. MahaMetro, after construction of the underground station, will develop two floors above it for the MSRTC. The MSRTC will be able to shift the bus operations back to the existing location after the Metro station’s work is completed. Since the land is with MSRTC, it can opt for further commercial development of the space above the bus terminus.”

The official said a change in existing traffic flow had been proposed around the Shivajinagar bus terminus. The discussions on the same are under way with the traffic police. There is also a proposal to shut down the road stretch between the Shivajinagar bus terminus and Narveer Tanaji Wadi depot to facilitate the Metro work.
The MahaMetro has also received a go ahead from Pune Municipal Corporations tree authority to transplant trees from the Wakdewadi plot.
