If you are thinking about buying a new Honda CR-V, Civic, Accord, Pilot, or Odyssey, you might want to wait a year. Honda is bringing next-generation airbag technology for its customers starting next year. Honda announced this week they have designed and tested a new front passenger airbag that will keep you safer in the event of an accident.

A report from Motor Trend says Honda is not saying which of its cars will get it first, but we are speculating they will be the most popular models for families like the CR-V, Civic, Accord, Pilot, and Odyssey. Honda's new passenger-side airbag was co-developed with Swedish supplier Autoliv, and designed by Honda Research and Development at its safety research center in Raymond, Ohio.

How it’s different

The new airbag utilizes four major components, unlike conventional passenger-side airbags that use one inflatable part, to reduce the probability of injuries in a wider variety of frontal crashes. Honda says it works like a baseball catcher's mitt, with the sail panel catches and decelerates the occupant's head while also engaging the side chambers, pulling them inward to cradle and protect the head, mitigating the potential for injury.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says there were 3,816 front passenger deaths in 2017, most of them adults. The number drops to 1,781 total deaths in the second row and 83 in the third row. Honda says they are also working to develop and deploy advanced passive safety and active safety systems that can reduce the severity of a collision or help avoid it entirely.

Honda has its Honda Sensing safety tech that is available now on all of its vehicles. The safety suite includes collision management braking, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and traffic sign recognition systems. Honda has other driver-assist tech like Lane Watch, blind spot information, cross-traffic monitor, and auto high-beam headlights for added safety.

Honda plans to begin applying its next-generation airbag technology to new products like the 2020 CR-V, Civic, Accord, Pilot, and Odyssey in the U.S. starting next year. Stay tuned.
