Man dies after being restrained, handcuffed by police at Sydney hospital

A man has died after being handcuffed and put on a stretcher by police responding to an incident at a Sydney hospital.

Officers were called to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick about 6.30pm on Monday, and found hospital security and paramedics restraining a 33-year-old man while medical staff tried to treat him.

"After the man was handcuffed and placed on a stretcher, he lost consciousness and was unable to be revived," police said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Health Services Union on Tuesday said it was supporting its members who were involved in the incident.

HSU Secretary Gerard Hayes said he was "deeply dismayed to see yet another case of violence at a NSW hospital" and that members would be provided with "every appropriate support throughout this investigation."

He said the broader problem of violence in hospitals requires a "comprehensive" response from the NSW government.

The fatality on Monday night was the fifth serious incident since hospital workers went on strike three weeks ago to demand safer working conditions, Mr Hayes said.

"We urgently need 250 extra security officers with appropriate power and training for a clinical setting," he said.

A critical incident investigation has been launched and will be subject to an independent review.
