Of the 66 mandals in the district, 31 have logged a deficit

Though it is raining cats and dogs in the coastal districts, the rainfall is hardly sufficient to fill irrigation tanks in Chittoor district.

Of the 66 mandals, only eight have received rain in excess of the normal, i.e., Yadamari, Thavanampalle, Nindra, Gangavaram, Palamaner, Pakala, Karvetinagaram and Vedurukuppam.

Stark scenario

These mandals received huge rainfall, registering an increase of 20% above the normal rainfall. While only 22 mandals received normal rainfall, 31 are in the ‘deficient’category, where the deviation is 20% to 59.9% below normal.

Kalakada, Thamballapalle, Vayalpadu, Renigunta and Kalikiri mandals were the worst-hit, registering a deficit rainfall of 60%.

Pilgrims drenched

The heavy rain on Sunday turned out to be several times higher than that witnessed during the first 17 days of the month.

Meanwhile, incessant rain pounded Tirupati right from daybreak on Sunday, causing inconvenience to visiting pilgrims.

Passengers stranded

Passengers remained stranded for several hours at the railway station and the central bus station.

The low-lying areas remained inundated as the stormwater drains overflowed, spilling sewer water on to the roads. A semblance of normalcy returned only by evening.
