Skilled volunteers joined flood relief efforts in the district by offering their expertise in repairing electrical and electronic gadgets and appliances under an initiative of the Industrial Training Department and Haritha Kerala Mission.
The group of skilled volunteers christened “Naipunya Karma Sena” comprises teachers and students of Industrial Training Institutes in the district. They are on a mission to restore gadgets and appliances damaged in floods in various parts of the district. Officials said the volunteers had already covered 428 houses in Padiyur, Irikkur, Malappattam, Mayyil, Chengalayi, Ezhome, Sreekantapuram, Chirakkal, and Valapattanam. They offer services free of cost.
Among the works the volunteers completed included wiring works in houses that had been submerged in water and repair of electronic gadgets and damaged furniture. They did plumbing work and carpentry as also repair of items including gas stoves, regulators, fridges, motors, washing machines, grinders, iron boxes and fans, among others.
The task force of skilled volunteers was formed in the wake of the floods last year. The force has a membership of 102 students and 25 teachers. This time, the force is working as groups of three teams. The repair and restoration works in households are being carried out under the aegis of local bodies concerned. The officials said that the group had volunteered their expertise in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts after the deluge last year.
