An elderly man has died in hospital from critical injuries suffered in a house fire on the NSW south coast.

The 90-year-old was found with smoke inhalation and burns inside a home in Sunshine Bay about 7.45pm on Sunday.

The mattress he was sleeping on had caught fire, police say.

He was taken to Bateman's Bay Hospital in a critical condition but died on Monday morning.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
