Man steals donations from Brisbane koala sanctuary
A Brisbane burglar has snatched donation money earmarked for sick, injured, and orphaned koalas.
Hundreds of dollars in cash was stolen from the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary at Fig Tree Pocket, early Monday morning.
The robber armed with what appeared to be red pickaxe masked his face with a balaclava and black ransacked a safe holding the donations, about 2:45am.
The man has also tried to break open an ATM.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary opened in 1927 as a safe refuge for koalas, at a time when the species was being culled for the fur trade.
Today, Lone Pine remains as one of Brisbane's most popular tourist destinations and has welcomed celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Cher, the Pope and the Queen.
Police have appealed for drivers who have dashcam footage around the Fig Tree Pocket Road and Ormsby Street areas between 2am and 3am to contact police.
